Portugal runs down the Atlantic edge of Iberia, and it changes character completely from top to bottom. Porto in the north is granite, steep streets and tiled facades above the Douro. Lisbon sits on its own hills further south, with the monastery and the tower out at Belém on the water. Keep going and you reach the Algarve, where the coast turns to cliffs and coves and the interior behind it turns to cork oak and dirt track.

Food is a reason to come on its own: the tapas and the petiscos, the pastries, the wine from the Douro and the Setúbal peninsula. Most of it is best found with somebody who knows which door to open.
