Le Marais was once a swamp on the edge of Paris — today it's the beating heart of the city, equal parts elegant, historic, and irreverently trendy. On this private walk I'll take you off the main streets and into the hidden squares, quiet gardens, and picturesque alleys that most visitors walk straight past. Starting from the beautiful Place des Vosges, we'll trace the district's story through remarkable characters of French history — the Duke of Sully, André Malraux, or the young Count of Montgomery, whose unintentional role in a royal tragedy reshaped this whole neighbourhood. Along the way we'll talk about the Jewish community that has called the Marais home for centuries, the LGBTQI+ history of what's affectionately known as the "Gay Paris," and the art galleries and street art that keep the district feeling alive and current. We'll finish in front of the Centre Pompidou, having covered church architecture, small hidden parks, and everything in between.
