Tours in Seville

Walk into Plaza del Triunfo in the early morning and you can already feel it, that pull between two walls that has nothing to do with size and everything to do with what's behind them. On one side, the Cathedral rises with the Giralda beside it, the old minaret turned bell tower that still gives the skyline its shape. On the other, the Alcázar, a palace that keeps changing style as you move through it, room by room, patio by patio, until you're not sure which century you're standing in. This is the heart of Seville, and it earns the crowds it gets.

Inside the Cathedral the scale does something to you before you've read a word of the guidebook. Chapels open off chapels, the choir sits enclosed like a building within the building, and somewhere in the gloom Columbus is said to rest, carried by four kings who never quite touch the ground. Climb the Giralda if your legs are willing. There are no steps, just a ramp built for horses and guards, and the view from the top lays out the whole tangle of the old town, the river beyond it, and the bullring catching the light.

The Alcázar is the other half of the morning, and it rewards slowness. The Mudéjar patios, the Patio de las Doncellas with its sunken garden, the ceilings that seem to drip with plasterwork, all of it built by Christian kings borrowing Islamic craftsmen and Islamic taste. Wander out into the gardens and the noise of the plaza disappears, replaced by orange trees, fountains, and peacocks that have clearly decided they own the place. Seeing both monuments with someone who knows which door leads where, and which detail you'd otherwise walk straight past, changes the whole visit.

Beyond these two, Seville keeps unfolding. The Santa Cruz quarter, all narrow lanes and hidden squares, the Triana neighbourhood across the river with its ceramics and flamenco bars, the Plaza de España with its tiled alcoves. Ask your guide about any of it. Chances are they know exactly where to take you next.
