Tours in San Sebastian

Walk along La Concha in the early evening and you will see the whole city arrange itself around the bay: the curve of the promenade, the tide moving in under the same soft light, and people simply out for a walk with nowhere particular to be. That stroll is basically a local institution here. San Sebastián doesn't hurry, and once you've done one lap of the beach you start to understand why people who visit for a weekend tend to come back for a lifetime.

Behind the beach is the Old Town, all narrow streets and low doorways, and this is where the city's other great obsession lives: pintxos. Every bar has its counter piled with food, and the custom is to move between two or three of them rather than settle in one, a small plate and a glass of txakoli at each stop. Less visible, tucked behind unmarked doors, are the Sociedades Gastronómicas, private clubs where Basque families have long gathered to cook and eat together. You won't stumble into one on your own, but getting inside for even an hour tells you more about how this city actually eats than any restaurant meal could.

Beyond the food, there is a city built for wandering. Monte Urgull rises at one end of the bay with paths threading up through it, Monte Igueldo faces it from the other side, and the river mouth separates the Old Town from the more elegant streets around the Hotel María Cristina, itself a good marker for where old San Sebastián gives way to newer avenues. The cathedral and the town hall are worth finding on foot rather than by map, and if there's a building or a corner you want to know more about, a local guide can usually take you there even if it isn't on a set list.

Most visitors end up doing some version of the same evening: beach, then bars, then bed. There's no need to resist that. The pleasure of San Sebastián is mostly in the repetition, one pintxo bar leading to another, one walk along the water leading to the next.
