Tours in Granada

You smell Granada before you understand it. Orange blossom in the Albaicín, jasmine spilling over a whitewashed wall, frying oil drifting up from a bar where the tapa is free with your drink and nobody asks what you want on it. The city sits where the Sierra Nevada meets the plain, and on a clear evening you can see snow on the peaks from a street where the air still smells of summer.

Everything in Granada points toward the hill above the Darro river. The Alhambra is not one building but a small walled city of its own, gates and towers and orchards, and inside it the Palacios Nazaríes are the part everyone comes for: courtyards built around still water, carved plaster that looks like lace from a distance and like handwriting up close, ceilings that make you stop walking and just look up. Wander through with someone who can read the arabic inscriptions and explain why the water is always there, always flat, always reflecting something, and the whole place stops being scenery and starts being a story. Afterwards the Generalife gardens give you somewhere to sit with what you have just seen, cypress hedges and running water and a view back across the gorge to the Albaicín.

That other hill, the Albaicín, is where you go to look back at the Alhambra rather than walk through it. Narrow lanes, closed doors that turn out to be teterías or private gardens called cármenes, and at the Mirador de San Nicolás the whole fortress lines up against the mountains for the photo everyone takes and nobody minds taking. Below both hills, the cathedral and the Capilla Real anchor the newer city, and the Sacromonte caves beyond the Albaicín are where flamenco still gets performed close enough to feel it. A day here barely covers the hill. Two lets you come down slowly.
