Wander from Place Saint-Michel toward the Sorbonne and you pass fountains, a jazz cellar tucked below street level, a church so old it barely announces itself, and a bookshop where the shelves sag with age and other people's marginalia. The Panthéon sits above it all like a full stop, and the Luxembourg Gardens open out at the end like a reward. Walk it with someone who grew up here and the stories start attaching themselves to doorways and stairwells you would otherwise walk straight past.

This is a city that rewards curiosity rather than checklists. If there is a corner, a church, or a market you want explained properly, a local guide can usually build a walk around it. That is really the point of wandering Paris with someone who lives here, not to see more, but to understand what you are already looking at.
