Stand on one of the little footbridges in Petite France at dusk and you can hear water everywhere before you see it. It runs under the half-timbered houses, along the old tanning and milling quarters, out toward the locks at Barrage Vauban, and it explains almost everything about how this city grew. Strasbourg was built by its river before it was built by anyone's grand design, and you feel that walking here more than you read it anywhere.

The old town rewards slow walking rather than a checklist. Streets carry the names of the trades that once worked them, and if you know what to look for, a facade will tell you whether a family made its money in wool, wine or fish. That layering, water shaping trade, trade shaping wealth, wealth eventually shaping ideas, is what makes the walk from Petite France up to Place Gutenberg feel like moving through chapters rather than just blocks. It's why the Cathedral, when you finally reach it, doesn't feel like an isolated monument dropped into the city. It feels earned, the endpoint of everything the streets around it were doing for generations.

The Cathedral itself deserves the climb up its narrow stairs if you're willing, if only for the view back over the roofs of the old town and the Vosges beyond. Beside it, Maison Kammerzell is worth a slow look at its carved facade before you step inside. Palais Rohan, a short walk away, shifts the tone entirely, all restraint and French court manners after the busier medieval streets. Saint-Thomas Church, on the other side of town, holds the quieter Protestant history that runs alongside the Catholic one and is easy to miss if nobody points you toward it.

Strasbourg rewards a guide who can hold all of this together, the canals, the guild streets, the churches, the printing presses that once stood near Gutenberg's square, into one walk rather than a list of stops.
