Arles sits where the Rhône starts to think about the Camargue, and the stone in this town has seen a lot of light change over its surface. You feel the Roman bones first, the amphitheatre rising right out of the old streets like the city grew up around it rather than the other way round. Walk close and you can still trace the arches where crowds once packed in, and on a quiet afternoon it is easy to stand in the middle of the arena and just listen to how the sound moves.

A little further on, the antique theatre is a gentler ruin, a few broken columns and tiered stone seats open to the sky, the kind of place where you sit down for a minute and stay for twenty. From there the town turns from Roman to Romanesque without much warning: the Primatiale Saint-Trophime holds a carved portal worth stopping in front of for longer than you planned, and the cloister behind it is one of those spaces where the noise of the street disappears completely.

Then there is the other Arles, the one Van Gogh painted from café tables and hospital gardens, and you notice it most on the Place du Forum in the evening, when the terraces light up and the sky does something that makes you understand why he stayed. The light here really is different, sharper and more yellow than a few miles inland, and it is worth timing a walk around the old town for late afternoon just to see it happen.
