Tours in Avignon

You know the song before you know the bridge. Everyone does. Then you round a corner near the ramparts and there it is, four arches reaching into the Rhône and stopping mid-air, going nowhere in particular, and it makes more sense than the song ever did. Avignon does that to you. It hands you the postcard first and the city second.

The Palais des Papes sits over the old town like it still expects deference. Walk up towards it in the late afternoon and the stone goes gold, and you understand why a city this size once ran half of Christendom's business. Inside, the scale of the place, the bare vast rooms, the sense of a court that has emptied out and left the architecture standing guard, is worth the climb on its own. It is the kind of building you need someone to talk you through, because the walls alone tell you it mattered, not why.

Behind the palace the streets narrow and the crowds thin out fast. This is the Avignon that does not photograph as well but stays with you longer: shuttered facades, small squares with a single plane tree, laundry over an alley, a fountain nobody stops at. Follow them long enough and you hit the ramparts, still ringing the old town, and beyond them the river opens up and the bridge appears again from a different angle, better this time because you have earned it.

Down by the water in the evening, Avignon slows into something closer to ordinary Provence: pastis, conversation, the light going long over the Rhône. Villeneuve-lès-Avignon watches from the far bank if you want a second town for free. But most people just stay put, facing the palace, the bridge, the old walls, and let the city do what it has always done, which is look better the longer you sit with it.
