Lausanne is a city built on a slope, and you feel it in your legs before you feel it anywhere else. Streets tip down toward the lake or climb back up toward the cathedral, and the old town seems designed to make you stop, catch your breath, and notice the view you didn't ask for. That's usually the moment you realise Lake Geneva is sitting right there below you, with the Alps doing their thing on the far shore.

The cathedral is the obvious anchor, sitting above the rooftops with steps leading up to it from most directions, and the climb is worth doing slowly. From there the old town spreads out in narrow lanes and stone stairways, the Escalier du Marché among them, leading down toward Rue du Bourg and its shopfronts. Nearby, the Palais de Rumine looks like it wandered in from Florence and stayed, its halls now split between several of the city's museums. Wander far enough and you'll also pass Château Saint-Maire, solid and quiet, tucked among the government buildings that surround it.

What makes Lausanne worth a full day rather than a quick look is how the pieces connect. A walk through the upper town naturally leads to a coffee, a chocolatier, a viewpoint you didn't expect at Esplanade de Montbenon, and eventually the metro, a small driverless train that slides you down through the hillside to Ouchy. Down there the mood changes entirely: sailboats, a long lakeside promenade, people lying on the grass with the mountains as a backdrop. It's a short ride but a real shift in scenery.

Lausanne rewards this kind of movement, upper town to lakeside, stone stairways to open water, and a local guide is the easiest way to string it together without missing the good cafes or the stories that don't make it onto plaques.
