The first thing you notice in Geneva is the water. A column of it, blasting straight up from the lake and hanging there in the wind, visible from half the city like a compass point. Locals barely look at it anymore, but it tells you something true: this is a city organised around its lake, and most of what matters here happens along its edge or a short walk up from it.

Climb away from the water and you're in the Old Town within minutes, a knot of cobbled streets, stone facades and quiet courtyards that feels several sizes smaller than the international city Geneva actually is. Saint Peter's Cathedral sits at the top of it, plain outside, surprising inside, and the streets around it carry the memory of the Reformation without needing to explain themselves too loudly, the Reformation Wall down in the park does that job instead, row after row of stone figures against the greenery. Wander far enough and you'll pass Maison Tavel, the flower clock, the fountains of Place du Bourg-de-Four, and a chocolatier or two that people have been walking into for generations out of habit as much as craving.

Geneva has another face too, quieter and glassier, out past the Old Town along the lake toward Place des Nations. This is where the city's diplomatic side lives, the Palais des Nations behind its gates, the Broken Chair sculpture facing it, embassies and NGO headquarters lining streets that feel more like a campus than a neighbourhood. It's an odd contrast with the medieval streets across town, but it's very much Geneva too, the city that hosts arguments and treaties the way other cities host festivals.

Beyond the city itself, the lake pulls you outward. Vineyard terraces rise in tiers above the shoreline toward Lausanne and Vevey, alpine villages sit an easy drive away with cheese and chocolate made the old way, and gorges and underground lakes wait in the hills if you want a day away from streets altogether. Geneva is compact enough to see on foot in an afternoon and generous enough, in every direction, to fill several more.
