The mist sits on Sintra most mornings before the sun burns it off, and that damp cool air is half the reason the hills fill with palaces instead of farmhouses. You feel that as soon as you start climbing out of the town centre, past the old streets, the shops selling travesseiros, and the smell of something sweet from a bakery you'll circle back to later.

Pena Palace is the one everyone comes for, a mash of towers and tiles in yellow and red that looks half like a dream and half like a dare, sitting above gardens that fold into forest trails going in every direction. Give it real time. Below it, Quinta da Regaleira works on you differently, quieter and stranger, with mossy grottoes and a spiral well sunk into the ground that people descend like they're stepping into something they shouldn't. Between the two, the streets of the historic centre are worth slowing down for, all cobbles and tiled facades and small shops that don't feel arranged for visitors.

Sintra isn't only about looking up at buildings. Cabo da Roca sits out where the land runs out and the Atlantic takes over, wind and cliff and not much else, the kind of place that makes you go quiet for a minute. From there the coast bends down toward Cascais, a beach town with none of Sintra's fog, all light and open bay, good for a walk along the sand or a coffee as the afternoon runs down. Doing Sintra and Cascais in the same day works because they're such different moods, and having someone drive you between them means you spend the time looking out the window instead of at a map.
