Tours in Coimbra

Coimbra sits on a hill above the Mondego, and the whole city seems to lean toward the water. Walk down from the upper town and the streets narrow into stone stairways, laundry strung overhead, cafes with three tables and no sign. Climb back up and you reach the university, where the old library holds its books in gilded shelves and bats are still said to patrol the rafters at night, eating the insects that would otherwise eat the pages. Students in black capes cut through the courtyards, and in the evenings you can sometimes hear fado drifting out of a doorway, heavier and more restrained than the Lisbon version, sung mostly by men.

Below the university, the cathedral known as the Sé Velha looks more like a fortress than a church, thick walled and low, built for defending a hilltop as much as for prayer. The Santa Cruz monastery, near the old commercial streets, holds tombs and tilework worth ducking into even if you only meant to pass by. The river itself is where the city relaxes: students punt boats past the Choupal woods, and the far bank has a quieter, greener feel than the compact tangle of the centre.

Outside the city, in the countryside toward Condeixa, Conimbriga waits under open sky. It is one of the fuller Roman sites left standing in Portugal, and walking it feels different from reading about it in a museum case. You cross from a spring that once fed the town's aqueduct, past a modern museum that lays out the context in maps and film, and into the ruins themselves, where the House of the Fountains keeps mosaics of gods, seasons and animals underfoot, still sharp enough to read. A guide who knows the site can turn the foundations back into rooms, and the silence back into a working town.

Coimbra rewards slow walking more than a checklist. Give it an afternoon in the old streets, an evening by the river, and a day out at Conimbriga if you have one to spare.
