Experience Lisbon beyond the postcard views on this 3-hour walking tour through the city's most fascinating historic neighbourhoods. We'll wander from the elegant, earthquake-rebuilt streets of Baixa into the medieval maze of Alfama, pausing at viewpoints over the rooftops and river along the way. Starting in lively Rossio Square, you'll hear the dramatic story of the 1755 earthquake, walk beneath the monumental Rua Augusta arch, and learn about Lisbon's role in the Age of Discoveries before visiting the historic Lisbon Cathedral. From there we climb into Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, where traditional azulejo tiles and everyday life carry on much as they always have. We'll stop at two of the city's best miradouros — Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol — for sweeping views, and talk about the origins of Fado and the Portuguese idea of saudade. The walk finishes beside the Tagus River in the magnificent Praça do Comércio, Lisbon's grand riverside square. This is a walk built around stories as much as sights: royal squares, medieval streets, music, and the river that connected Lisbon to the wider world.
