Start at Parque Colón, in the Colonial Zone, in the late afternoon. The cathedral stands over the square, the stone has gone warm, and old men claim the benches under the trees to argue about baseball. Walk out in any direction and the streets narrow into lanes of pastel doorways, with music coming from somewhere you cannot quite see.
The Colonial Zone is the part of Santo Domingo most people picture, and it rewards slow walking. Calle El Conde runs through it, lined with cafés and shops. Plaza de España opens out toward the river, and the Alcázar de Colón sits on one side of it. Churches, convents and ruined walls turn up where you do not expect them. Stop for a cold Presidente or a plate of mangú, and let the heat set the pace.
Then leave the old streets behind, because the city is bigger than its postcard. A short drive takes you to Los Tres Ojos, where you climb down into limestone caves and find still, green lakes underground. Wear shoes with grip, since the steps can be slick. Then there is the Columbus Lighthouse, a huge, strange monument that people tend to love or argue about. Ride the cable car and you see the other Santo Domingo, the crowded barrios and the river from above.
The Malecón is where the city goes in the evening, along the sea, with traffic, merengue and the smell of salt and grilled food. Some visitors also ask about the Zona Colonial's other sights, such as the Panteón Nacional, the Fortaleza Ozama or the Museo de las Casas Reales. We do not list tours for those yet, but a local guide can take a request. A private guide born in the city can shape a day around what you want to see.
