Walk through Santo Domingo with a local guide, enjoying Dominican food, markets, Chinatown and the everyday places where residents eat and shop.

Highlights

  • Enjoy a Dominican meal at a restaurant frequented by local residents.
  • Explore Chinatown and discover how Asian food traditions became part of Santo Domingo.
  • Visit markets and see ingredients used in everyday Dominican cooking.
  • Compare everyday local products with those usually marketed to tourists.
  • Leave with practical food recommendations for the rest of your stay.
Discover Santo Domingo through the food that is part of everyday life in the city. This walking tour goes beyond restaurants created mainly for visitors. We’ll eat, shop and walk through places used by local residents while exploring how Dominican food connects with markets, migration, neighborhoods and the changing character of the city. We’ll begin with a relaxed Dominican meal at a local restaurant, choosing from the dishes available that day. Along the way, you’ll discover local snacks and seasonal fruit, explore Santo Domingo’s Chinatown and see how Asian food traditions have adapted to Dominican tastes. We’ll also visit the Mercado Modelo area, where fruits, vegetables, roots, spices and other everyday ingredients are still sold around a market whose interior has gradually become more focused on souvenirs. A stop at a regular supermarket gives you another perspective on the coffee, chocolate and other products Dominicans actually buy. The final part of the walk takes us through Puerta del Conde and Calle El Conde, where I’ll point out older food businesses and share recommendations you can use during the rest of your stay. The experience is relaxed and conversational rather than gourmet or formal. Foods may change depending on the time of day, freshness and availability, but the idea remains the same: to help you understand Santo Domingo through the way people here actually eat. Solo travellers are welcome, and the tour is kept small so there is plenty of time for questions and conversation.
