London does not announce itself in one place. You feel it change block by block: the hush of a gallery on Trafalgar Square, then two streets later a doorway where a young David Jones lived out of a caravan before anyone called him Bowie. Denmark Street still smells faintly of guitar polish and old carpet, tucked behind Soho like a secret the city forgot to lock. This is a place that rewards walking slowly and looking sideways, at the plaque above the pub rather than the pub itself.

Soho and the West End carry a lot of that weight. By day the streets around Carnaby Street and Denmark Street are lined with instrument shops and studio doors that once had the Rolling Stones or Bob Marley pass through them, and a guide who knows which building is which can turn an ordinary stroll into something closer to a treasure hunt. By night the same streets shift entirely: Covent Garden lights up its old market square with buskers and bar chatter, Seven Dials sends you off in seven directions at once, and tucked-away corners like Neal's Yard glow with colour that daylight somehow hides. Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square are close enough to fold into the same evening.

For art, the National Gallery sits on Trafalgar Square and rewards a proper visit rather than a quick pass through. Its rooms move you through Van Eyck's quiet domestic scenes, into the drama of Caravaggio and Rubens, past Velázquez and Rembrandt, and on to Van Gogh's sunflowers, and a guide can string these together into a story instead of a list of names on a wall.
