Start with the weather changing four times before lunch, and you already understand something true about Britain. It is a small country that behaves like several different ones stitched together, and the join lines are half the pleasure of visiting. London sprawls along the Thames with its wheel and its bridges and its museums that cost you nothing to walk into, but it is also a city of narrow streets that remember things, if you know where to look.

Soho is one of those streets, or rather a knot of them. Denmark Street still smells faintly of guitar polish and has done for as long as anyone can recall, a short run of shopfronts where more than one legendary band signed a first contract or bought a first instrument. Walk it slowly and the pubs and studios start talking: a jazz club Amy Winehouse loved, a caravan where a young David Jones lived before he became David Bowie, a doorway the Sex Pistols once called home. Carnaby Street runs nearby, still dressed for rebellion. It is the kind of walking that rewards someone telling you exactly where to look, which is why a guided route through this stretch of the West End is worth doing rather than reading about.

Beyond London the country changes register. Edinburgh stacks itself up a volcanic hill toward a castle, with a festival that takes over every stage and doorway. Bath sits in a bowl of golden stone with Roman baths and a river bend. The Lake District offers hills and water that people return to every year without quite explaining why. Cardiff, Liverpool, York, Oxford, each has its own draw, a cathedral or a dock or a college quad worth an afternoon.

Wherever you land, Britain rewards slow walking over a checklist, and a local who can point out the pub the Sex Pistols drank in, or the alley nobody photographs, changes the day completely.
