Tours in Istanbul

You smell Istanbul before you understand it. Grilled corn on a cart, salt air off the Bosphorus, tea steeping somewhere just out of sight. The city sits on two continents and never lets you forget it, ferries crossing back and forth all day like the water is just another street. You could spend your whole visit deciding which side to stand on and still not choose.

The old city holds the postcard version, and it earns it. Hagia Sophia dominates the skyline with a dome that still seems to hover, its walls carrying faded mosaics from a different age of the building's life. Across the square the Blue Mosque answers it, tiled in patterns that reward a slow look rather than a quick photo. Between them, the old Hippodrome is quiet now, just an open stretch with an obelisk and a fountain, but it once held crowds roaring for chariots, and something of that noise seems to linger under the calm.

Walk downhill and you reach Topkapi Palace, courtyard after courtyard opening onto gardens and views of the water, with the Harem tucked behind its own gate holding stories of sultans and the women who quietly ran things around them. Lunch somewhere nearby should involve something grilled or stewed, followed by tea poured from a distance, or baklava eaten standing up. Then comes the Grand Bazaar, covered lanes stacked with lamps, spices, and carpets, where the real skill is not buying but bargaining, and where getting lost is not a problem, it is the point.

Beyond the old city, Istanbul keeps going: the spice market's colour, the Bosphorus shoreline at sunset, the hills of the Asian side looking back at the minarets. One day here barely scratches it, but the old city walk gives you the spine the rest of the city hangs off.
