Arusha is not the reason you came to Tanzania, and that is exactly why it works. It is the town where the safari starts. You will see Land Cruisers parked outside guesthouses, drivers checking tyres at dawn, and visitors in brand new hiking boots hunting for coffee. Mount Meru sits behind the town, and on a clear morning it looks close enough to walk to.

Give it a few hours before you leave. The central market is the place to go for a real feel of daily life, with piles of tomatoes, bananas and spices, and sellers who will tell you what is in season. Eat something grilled and simple, nyama choma if you can, and drink tea with plenty of milk. Look for the clock tower roundabout, a landmark people use to give directions to everything else. Locals will point you towards the Maasai market and the cultural heritage centre if you want crafts and a slower browse.

The real draw is what lies beyond the edge of town. From here the roads fan out to Tarangire, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, and a good guide makes each one feel different. Tarangire is baobab country, with elephants moving through the trees and the river drawing everything toward it. The Serengeti is open plain and big sky, where you spend a full day following cats and watching herds shift across the grass. Ngorongoro is a descent into a bowl of wildlife, where you scan for black rhino among the grazers.

A five-day trip links these places together and lets the landscape change around you, so you feel the distance rather than just reading it on a map. Want to climb Meru, visit Kilimanjaro's foothills or see a village outside town? Ask. A local guide can build that around the time you have.
