Start in Skopje, because that is where most people land, and give it a slow morning. Macedonia Square is big, loud with statues and white facades, and it divides opinion the moment you step into it. Stand in the middle and turn all the way round. Then walk to the river, cross the Stone Bridge on foot, and notice how the air changes on the far side.

That far side is the Old Bazaar. Lanes narrow, shopfronts get smaller, and the smell of grilled meat and coffee follows you from one corner to the next. Metalworkers, sweet shops, little courtyards behind heavy doors. Take your time here. Above it all sits Kale Fortress, a short climb with the whole city laid out below, the old quarter on one side and the newer centre on the other. It is the quickest way to understand how Skopje fits together. The Church of the Holy Saviour is worth finding too, quiet and inward after the noise of the square.

Leave the capital and the country opens up. Ohrid is the one people talk about, a lakeside town of steep lanes, churches on the rocks and long evenings by the water. Bitola has a grand street of cafes where locals do their afternoon walking. Mavrovo and Galičica bring mountains and forest, and Matka Canyon is an easy escape from Skopje when you want green and quiet. Food is the thread through all of it: tavče gravče, ajvar, fresh bread, rakija if you are brave.

We have a walking tour in Skopje today, led by a licensed local guide, and it ends with a proper meal. If you want Ohrid, Bitola, the canyon or the mountains, ask. A local guide can take the request and shape a day around it.
