Tours in Bergamo

Take the funicular up from the lower town and the air changes before your feet do. Bergamo Alta sits on its hill wrapped in walls, and the streets narrow the moment you're inside them, cobbled and shaded, the kind of place where you stop checking a map and just follow the sound of your own footsteps. Down below, Bergamo Bassa gets on with being a normal Italian city, traffic and shopfronts and people rushing to work. Up top, time slows to the pace of someone walking a dog across Piazza Vecchia.

That square is where you'll want to sit for a while, with the Palazzo della Ragione on one side and the Torre Civica watching over it, its bell still marking the hours the way it always has. Just past it, Piazza Duomo gathers the cathedral, the Colleoni Chapel with its patterned marble front, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, dim and gold inside in a way that makes you lower your voice without being told to. None of it feels arranged for visitors. It feels like a town that has simply kept living inside its own walls.

This is exactly the kind of place that rewards having someone walk it with you, because half of what makes Bergamo Alta what it is isn't visible from the street. It's in the legends attached to certain doorways, the reason a particular alley bends the way it does, the stories locals tell about the walls and the saints and the families who once ran things. A two-hour walk through La Cittadella, starting down at the station, threads through the squares and lanes with those stories layered in, so the buildings stop being just old and start being specific.

Afterwards, walk the ramparts if your legs are up for it. The view opens out over the plain and, on a clear day, back towards the mountains that gave the city its reason for being built where it is. Bergamo doesn't hurry you into liking it. It just waits at the top of its hill until you climb up and see for yourself.
