Start at Alexanderplatz and you already feel the city arguing with itself. The Fernsehturm pokes up over everything like a needle stuck in the past, there's a clock and a fountain where people just sit, and if you look past the trams you'll spot one of Berlin's older churches tucked in among buildings that clearly don't share its decade. That's Berlin in one square: layers that don't quite match, left visible instead of smoothed over.

Walk toward Museumsinsel and the city changes register entirely. Suddenly it's columns, domes, a cathedral with its weight pressed into the riverbank, and museum after museum holding everything from Babylonian gates to Prussian oil paintings. You don't have to go inside any of them to feel the pull of the place, though most people end up ducking into at least one.

From there, Unter den Linden does what a grand avenue is supposed to do: it makes you walk slower. Humboldt University on one side, the rebuilt Berlin Palace on the other, and the Brandenburg Gate waiting at the end of it like a full stop. It's the kind of street where every building seems to want to tell you something about what Germany was trying to be at the time, and often contradicts the building next door.

Beyond the gate, the Tiergarten opens up, and the city exhales. It's a proper park, big enough to lose the traffic noise in, with the Siegessäule rising gold out of the trees. A walking tour through this stretch, from Alexanderplatz to the Tiergarten, is really a walk through the versions of Berlin that piled up on top of each other: imperial, divided, rebuilt, and still being argued over in the beer gardens afterward.
