Tours in Prague

The first thing you notice in Prague is how the light hits the roofs. Walk up toward the Castle in the early morning and the whole valley below is orange tile and green spires, with the Vltava cutting through it like it was placed there on purpose. You'll smell coal smoke in winter and grilled sausage in summer, and someone will always be playing an accordion badly near a bridge.

The Castle itself is less a single building than a small walled town, with the cathedral spires piercing up above the courtyards and a view over the city that makes people stop mid-sentence. From there the ground drops away toward the river, through the steep lanes of the Little Quarter where the houses are painted the color of old sweets. This is the natural start of a walk across the city, and it's why a guided route from the Castle down to Charles Bridge and on into Old Town works so well: the geography does the storytelling for you.

Charles Bridge deserves the crowds it gets. The statues lining it have their own quiet dramas if someone points them out, and the view up and down the river, toward the Castle one way and the towers of Old Town the other, is the kind of thing that makes people stand still and hold up traffic. Beyond the bridge, Old Town Square opens up wide, with the astronomical clock drawing a crowd on the hour and the spires of Týn Church behind it looking like something out of a fairy tale someone forgot to finish.

Beyond that stretch, Prague rewards wandering without a plan. The Jewish Quarter, the parks up on the hills across the river, the beer halls tucked into cellars where the tables are shared with strangers. A short walk covers the highlights well, but the city keeps going in every direction from there, and it's worth giving it more than an afternoon.
