Chengdu moves at the speed of a teahouse. Sit long enough in People's Park with a glass of jasmine tea and someone will offer to clean your ears with a tuning fork, or you'll watch a retiree practice calligraphy on the pavement with a brush dipped in water, the characters evaporating before the next stroke finishes. This is a city that likes to sit down, and once you fall into its rhythm you stop rushing too.

But the animal everyone comes for lives on the edge of town, and it earns the trip. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is spread across hillsides of bamboo groves, and the pandas do exactly what you hope: they sprawl, they chew, they fall off things. Go early and the light through the bamboo is soft and the pandas are more awake, ambling between feeding stations. There are red pandas too, smaller and quicker, easy to miss if you don't know where to look, which is where a guide who knows the paths earns their keep, walking you straight to the enclosures worth lingering at instead of losing an hour to signage and crowds.

Back in the city, the Wide and Narrow Alleys hold courtyard houses turned into teahouses and snack stalls, and it's worth wandering without a plan, letting the smell of chili oil and Sichuan pepper pull you down one lane and then another. Jinli Street does something similar with more lantern light in the evenings. If temples are your thing, Wenshu Monastery has an incense haze that settles over the courtyards and a vegetarian kitchen worth timing your visit around. And if you want the food scene laid bare, Chengdu's hotpot culture is not shy, it announces itself in steam and numbing spice from a dozen doorways on any given street.

Further out, Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan irrigation works reward a slower day, green and quiet against the pace of downtown, while the giant Buddha at Leshan makes for a longer trip that many pair with an overnight. Chengdu rewards curiosity more than any checklist, and however you spend the day, you'll end it back in a teahouse, unbothered, watching the city do what it does best: nothing in particular, very well.
