Start at the Lindwurm fountain on Neuer Platz and you already have the city's whole personality in one bronze knot of dragon and club-wielding men. Klagenfurt likes its legends close to the surface. Walk a few steps further and there's Maria Theresia's statue watching over the square, and it's easy to miss how many other lives got lived out around her, quieter ones that never made it into the guidebooks.

The old town rewards slow walking rather than checklist sightseeing. Narrow streets open into courtyards, façades lean into each other in shades of ochre and grey, and every so often you find a doorway or a stair that clearly mattered to someone once, even if nobody put up a plaque.
